A celebration of mother & son

Today was one of those days... a day in which so much emotion and gratitude and happiness arises that you barely know what to do with it all. So I simply did my best to soak it all in.

We could hardly wait to wish Graham a Happy THIRD Birthday this morning. We spent the whole weekend celebrating, with his party being yesterday and his real birthday and our family's Mother's Day outing being today. Jeff's parents were up from Iowa and his brother in from Brooklyn. I know Margaret must have loved celebrating with BOTH her boys and her grandchildren, too.

To celebrate both events, we decided to ride the train! The Osceola & St. Croix Valley Railway took us on a two-hour scenic trip along the St. Croix River while also serving up a lovely Mother's Day brunch. Nothing could be better than a train ride for a 3 year old. Meanwhile, the moms loved spending time with our family while the woods passed by our train windows. We saw a gigantic bald eagle's nest and an abundance of yellow, spring flowers dotting the ground as we rumbled along.

Our entire train car sang "Happy Birthday," to Graham, which pleased him I think, even though he lowered his eyes and covered his ears. Sweet boy. We are so blessed to have you in our lives. We never could have imagined the utter joy he would bring.

G-Man is 2!

It's been a whole week since the Grahamster turned 2. We thought it was about time to post pictures of our celebratory day. He blew out his candles with gusto and immediately took to his new "BIIIIG!" dump truck. He is all boy!

Graham's 1st Birthday

Despite a 104 fever, a few folks said "fever schmever" and decided to come over anyway and celebrate Graham's 1st Birthday. Graham had so much fun that if I hadn't seen the thermometer myself I wouldn't have believed he had (and still does have) a temperature! Our small, wonderful crew of friends sang "Happy Birthday" and enjoyed cake, sangria and homemade graham cracker ice cream. (Yes, we have A LOT left over.)

Graham's last day as an 11-month old

I won't lie: I am completely and totally emotional today, thinking back on this time last year, almost (but not quite yet) in labor. Graham turns 1 tomorrow. How is it that I grew this little guy, birthed him, nursed him so he became a big chunk, and now have this amazing almost 1-year-old in my life? Thinking back to labor, it's crazy to think that I had no idea who we were about to meet, nurture, love, and get to know. It has been a wild, sleep depriving, joyful year and we are so, so happy to be the parents of this sweet little boy.

We're having a party for him (and us!!!) on Saturday and will post video and birthday pictures next week. Until then, here's a video of Graham and his play group friends from this morning. If we're not outside (which is the best possible place to play—Dirt! Sticks! Grass! Flowers to pull up!), then the stairs still rule as the number one source of entertainment.
